Ostara – Spring Equinox (March 21)

On March 21 (the spring equinox), spring ushers in a new cycle of seasons. Not only does the sun provide the Earth with its warming light and energy for a longer period of time, but humanity, in its spiritual fullness, is also woven into the cosmic web on the wings of knowledge regarding the omnipotence of its metaphysical connection and nourished by inspiring influences.

Winter has passed. Those who take advantage of this quiet, passing season to make sense of and come to terms with the ups and downs of the past months—that is, to find their balance—will face the coming months with serenity, for their lives will be fulfilled on both the spiritual and material planes. The mythology relevant here, which elevates us into the spiritual worldview of Ostara, the goddess of fertility, makes it clear that the annual cycles (spring, summer, autumn, and winter) each contain elements of creative power. That is to say: If the spiritual rules actively expressed during the winter season have been utilized and followed (e.g., rituals during the Twelve Days of Christmas, performing rituals of light, reflection, and contemplation, etc.), the person performing these rituals will be spiritually cleansed, purified, and physically strengthened; likewise, space is created for changes or new steps in navigating life. The ground prepared for this during the winter season is, at the beginning of spring (the time of sowing), imbued with the energetic power of Ostara, the goddess of fertility; therefore, the sowing of one’s goals should be undertaken now so that, following a process of maturation (constant reaffirmation and, if necessary, renewal of the goals), the harvest can be reaped—a principle that applies to both spiritual and worldly endeavors.

As autumn turns to winter, farmers must prepare the fields for sowing the new crop. During the winter, they maintain their machinery and order seeds and fertilizer.

If we consider the secular definition and focus of the equinox and the beginning of spring within the context described above, we observe that societies with a distinctly Western orientation show little or no interest in the mythological aspects of the changing seasons, save perhaps for economic reasons. Nevertheless, modernity is subject to traditional laws: At the transition from autumn to winter, farmers must prepare the fields for sowing the new crop. During the winter, machinery is maintained, and seeds and fertilizer are ordered. This procedure applies to both conventional and organic farming. The latter, despite the organic label, is not a mythically ritualized farming method and, like chemical food production (unfortunately), is subject to profit-seeking. One reason for this is that the guidelines and regulations associated with organic farming methods trigger costly “organic certification and inspections.” Added to this is the fact that too many organic producers, large corporations, and capital companies are involved in the distribution of the multi-billion-dollar organic market. Despite all these adversities, organic food production is part of the current process of transformation in social contexts, which serves to address the soulless structures of modernity in the spirit of “You are what you eat.”

In closing, as we reflect on the spiritual and secular aspects of the equinox, we can observe that the spiritual dimension—which is intrinsically linked to the onset of spring and shapes the harvests expected following the sowing of seeds—is currently governed by extremely secular influences. These influences hide behind economic hegemony and the opaque, monopolistic control of (still) existing societal structures under a modernist-technocratic agenda that even includes the deliberate destruction of crops to the detriment of humanity. (See our blog post on this topic: “Emotionality and Spiritual Change – Neptune’s Call for Transformation”).

Final Reflection

Even if aspects of conscious repression, denial, or the postulated ineffectiveness of spiritual forces (insofar as they do not follow the rules of religions sanctioned by modernity) may currently have the upper hand, the spiritually oriented person should not allow themselves to be deterred from walking their path through the gradually declining modernity, for the path of the spiritually oriented individual, through the fertilization of Ostara, is one that leads to a life’s purpose.
